Chelsea Have Agreed a Deal to Buy French Club Strasbourg

Chelsea have started their multi-club project after agreeing to buy French side Strasbourg. The deal is a major boost for Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who have been looking for a football club to purchase.

Initial expectations had forced them to settle for a minority stake in the club, leaving them unable to attain full control of the club.

Sources were released to determine whether there was going to be any benefit for Chelsea even though they engaged in further talks.

The size of the stake is unknown, but it was rumored that Chelsea owned close to 100% of the club, with the deal expected to be announced on June 23, 2023.

Reports in French say Chelsea are ready to pay €75 million for the shares of the club. Boehly has spoken about the multi-club model.

The American said, “We can show pathways for our young superstars to get on to the Chelsea pitch while getting them real game time.”

Chelsea have looked at a lot of clubs in Belgium, France, Portugal, and South America. It was reported that the club was already in talks with Bordeaux, but they feel Strasbourg makes more financial sense.

The Price of the club depended on whether it would qualify for the next campaign of the French Ligue 1. The club became successful, and they finished in the 15th position.

Chelsea showed their interest when they were unable to reach an agreement with the Bordeaux President, Gérard López.

Boehly has held productive discussions with Strasbourg’s president, Marc Keller, in recent months. There are 11 shareholders at Strasbourg, and Keller’s 27% stake gives him the biggest share.

At Cobham’s training facility, President Keller declared: “The consortium’s entrance should allow us to move this step further. Building on the principles that have led to our success, creating the conditions for a new goal, and moving forward steadily are all necessary.
