Chelsea are set to sign 18-year-old winger Diego Moreira on a free transfer from Portuguese giant Benfica in the summer, according to a report in Portugal.
The talented youngster had been one of the most talked-about players in Europe, with the winger showing impressive performances in Benfica’s youth ranks.
Chelsea continue to raid Benfica after the signing of Enzo Fernandes this season through Enzo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who is also the agent of Diego Moreira.
Chelsea were the only team that got serious about signing the player on a long-term deal, even though there was interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Champions League semi-finalist AC Milan.
Under Todd Boehly, Chelsea signed teenagers Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, who is a goalkeeper, David Fofana, Andre Santos, and Gabriel Slonina.
Boehly, who has spent over 550 million, still wants to spend more to boost his squad depth and make the Chelsea club a team capable of competing for silverware next season.
There are probabilities that 15 players will leave the club in the summer, with Christopher Nkunku coming to join the club for a 53 million-pound deal.
The winger was born in Liege, Portugal. Also, he holds dual citizenship and has represented both Belgium and Portugal at the youth level. The midfielder is eligible to play for Germany and Guinea-Bissau.
Who is Diego Moreira?
Moreira was born on August 6, 2004. He wears number 96 for Benfica. Moreira started his youth career in 2020 with Standard Liege before moving to Benfica the same year.
The talented midfielder had scored two goals in ten appearances for the team. For his national team career, the player had made 22 appearances with just two goals scored.
Moreira was promoted to Benfica’s first team alongside seven other Benfica youth team players, making his debut on May 13, 2022, in a 2-0 win against Pacos de Ferreira.
He played in the U-23 throughout the season. He made his professional debut for Benfica B on January 10, 2022.
He is described as a fast left-footed winger who is technically gifted with his style of play, and he is more often compared to former Manchester United player Nani.
Moreira won the Campeonato Nacional de Juniores in 2021–22. Also, he won the UEFA Youth League. The Portuguese won the U-20 Intercontinental Cup in 2022.
